Smyrna Council Greenlights $16M Tolleson Pool Revamp

Smyrna is diving into a major upgrade at Tolleson Pool, approving a $16-18 million overhaul that will transform the aging facility into a premier outdoor aquatic center. The project, which was fast-tracked due to safety concerns, will feature multiple pools, expanded amenities, and upgraded recreational spaces—but it also means the city will be without a public pool for the next two summers.

A Much-Needed Upgrade

Originally, city leaders planned a gradual renovation, but after discovering severe structural issues—including crumbling pool walls and leaking systems—they determined a full rebuild was necessary.

New Features and Expanded Capacity

The reimagined Tolleson Pool will include:

  • A Dedicated Competition Pool – A separate, heated pool with a dive well and starting blocks for swim teams and competitive events.

  • A Recreational Pool with Lazy River – Designed for casual swimmers and families, featuring a current loop for floating fun.

  • A Zero-Entry Splash Area – A safe, shallow water play space for young children.

  • A New Water Slide – Adding an exciting element for thrill-seekers.

  • Upgraded Locker Rooms & Concessions – Expanded facilities to enhance visitor experience, plus a rental space for private events.

Push for Year-Round Use?

While the plans are set for an outdoor facility, several residents at the town hall voiced strong support for covering the competition pool with a seasonal bubble to allow year-round swimming. City officials say they will explore the feasibility of this option in the coming months.

Construction Timeline & Impact

With the council’s approval, the design phase is moving forward quickly, with construction expected to begin later this year. However, the project timeline means Tolleson will remain closed for the next two swim seasons, with reopening anticipated in May 2027.

Next Steps

City officials are finalizing designs and working with engineers to address site conditions before construction begins. Meanwhile, the Parks & Recreation Department is working on alternative swim options for residents during the closure.

For updates on the project, residents can follow Smyrna’s official channels and attend future community meetings.
